maximo park at rothko last knight were a nicely energetic way to kick off the week. I need to get their new album but what I have heard kicks some ass. This was their forst ever show in New York (the USA?) and they pretty much nailed it. Maximo Park has a unique rock low-fi sound that falls somewhere in between the kaiser chiefs and the futureheads. However, unlike those bands I actually understood the lead sigers accent (maybe in Newcastle they speak a more Americanized english or is this where our accents originated?).

They were literally cheered on by sarah and her fellow tart Karen who were dressed in full chearleading uniforms and who introduced the band by leading the crowd in a chant of "when I say Maximo! you say Park!" It was pretty funny.

So I would have to say that while it was a great show and very energetic, maximo park basically suffers from the same phenomenon that almost every band out there today is suffering - as coolfer put it - they are a little bit different, but basically they are the same as all the other bands out there. The only band I have seen recently that does not suffer from this ill fate - besides the upwelling who has a completely unique sound of their own - is the wrens, who have been at it for 14 years and although they have proven unsuccessful, I can say that after seeing them, they are the real deal! Hows that for a run on sentence?

All the bands that are out and around right now are great... but none of them attain that level of excellence that I am searching for in my next favorite band. So I guess I should let you decide for yourself. Go buy a copy of ther maximo park cd when it comes out and catch their show next time they are in town. It will be well worth it, their show is energetic and entertaining, even if it wont save the future of music.

Here is an mp3 of maximo park from last nights show:

one other blogger thing...

in reviewing the Louis XIV album 'magic carpet' concludes that derivative is the new innovative - genuis

I saw Louis last week at sin-e and although they were awesome I mainly enjoyed them because I love classic rock and like the fame, they play classic rock and roll. nothing new, nothing special, but rock as rock and roll is music perfection, how could they have gone wrong?

Comments:
