bowery ballroom - october 7, 2004

in the past weeks i've seen a lot of bands, many not worth writing about. but rilo kiley topped 'em all. (except pj, but there not of the same league). anyway, rilo kiley is the most heart felt, beautiful, passionate, exciting, and friendly band around. the whole show i felt all this nachas for jenny.

i tried not to think about her as [ooops, i'm a dumbass] the cute girl in the movies of my childhood. i tried to take her seriously as a preformer. but i couldn't seperate the two. over the course of the show, jenny ascended beyond my preconceptions and emerged as more than a child actress or a lead singer... she is a super hero rock star!

did i mention they had two trumpet players and a violin and a cello also? awesome!

seriously though, this band had me eating out of their hands. i wish there was a picture available of the moment during "i never" when the lights were dim and jenny raised her hand towards the sky as she belted out the lung defying lead-in to the chorus. it was so exciting to see her harness the energy of the room and reciprocate it... i think her voice eminates emotion directly through the audience. it was like doing really great drugs to watch her play.

the whole show was filled by smart lyrics, entertaining stage banter (like how they played conan the night before and how nerve-racking that was, and how no one should go on a talk-show with hillary duff cause hillary travels with an entourage of 11 year-old girls who crowd the hallway and glare at you like, "hmph, you don't know hillary.") and a relaxed felling, like, "hey, lets hang out with people we like and play some great songs.

rilo kiley is talented, harmonious, and lyrically pleasing. i hope they will be around for a while. jenny has put a spell on me, so i hope she will be my wife. she's born a month before me, do you think i have a chance with an older women?

i'm going back tonight.
