We Built This City On Rock & Roll
// // Tuesday, October 19, 2004 // //

i think the new british is canadian. controller.controller is from canada.

they don't have the most original sound, but when you've got something that works, why change it? think rapture / moving units. this girl calls it "dancy-post-pre-neo-punk-rock," but i'm gonna go with "you have no choice but to dance" music.

some of their songs sound like the one they played six songs earlier (ala '82 U2), and they have songs that i could swear were covers of the moving units, but hell, it all worked, so forgive them. hung-over at 4 on a rainy afternoon... when that would-be moving units cover started, i found myself instantly dancing... not just tapping my foot, i'm talking staurday night - drunk as a skunk - white boy incarnating 1989 mc hammer - dancing!

but what set's controller.controller apart from moving units or the rapture is the structure of their songs. they experiment a lot with trends in movement. meaning that songs tend to be structured in multiple peices. a song will begin slow, build up, return to the slow segment, take off in a considerably different direction and then return to the fast paced grove. i always thought that these genius manouvers, perfected by the dead, were more entertaining because they cause trick your brain into having to think about tempos and structure and have fun at the same time. i've always had mad respect for bands that can pull this off well, and these guys rock it.

other notable aspects of controller.controller include the smooth guitar solos and the hottie lead singer whose expressive dance interprets the music and contagously causes everyone watching participate in the fun.

i'm patiently awaiting an album from these guys. they have a 6 song ep called "history," but you know how long it takes to get deliveries all the way from canada.

Comments:
ok i'm answering the phone on the same floor that scott stereogum works on so i feel like blogging/commenting more than usual.

did i somehow MISS you doing an MC Hammer dance? i now feel like i missed a really bizarre/awesome CMJ moment and you were kind of standing right next to me the whole time. whoops.

you're making me regret not staying at the paperbag records showcase (CBs Downstairs - Wed. night) long enough to see Controller Controller. I went mainly to see Magneta Lane who were on first, but I stayed long enough to see Uncut who were on next. Controller Controller were on after Uncut, but I had jetted. oh well, next time.
